"...the incumbents are content to devote their lives to prayer and to making wine"

Wednesday
From Viana we start by heading Eastwards along a picturesque highway towards our lunch destination at Villamayor de Monjardin. Our route follows a one-time major road, but we won't see many cars as 'our' road was bypassed by a motorway a few years ago.

After lunch we should have time to stop and take a look at the monastery of Iratxe. This huge pile of stone has been a hospital for pilgrims, a university, and a field hospital over the centuries.

Nowadays, the incumbents are content to devote their lives to prayer and to making wine, which they very generously give to pilgrims passing on the Camino de Santiago!

Estella is quite a large town (13k inhabitants?) and full of life. We'll be dining in the family-owned & run Lastarriaga restaurant in the heart of town.

Our hotel is in a quiet street nearer the edge of town and each of its sumptuous rooms is individually decorated with locally made antiques and objets d'art.
